In this session educators will explore strategies to bridge the gap of cultural diversity in their
classrooms. Session attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of Maslow’s hierarchy
of needs to implement in their instruction. A portion of this session will be dedicated to exploring
the impact of social determinants. More specifically, concepts around equity and equality, and
the hardship of these differences on educational success. We will also touch on the importance
of IQ and EQ (emotional intelligence), learning styles, and counter intuitive responses to the
classroom needs.
These high-level concepts will allow educators to create an environment rich for learning despite
challenges that students may face outside of the classroom. We will address why students are
not meeting standards; discuss characteristics of an effective learning environment; identify
steps that will optimize our ability to meet standards; as well as discuss the need to shift the
vision and the accountability of leadership in education to meet these goals.
As a result of attending my session, educators will leave with a clear and concise vision on how
to better lead our youth. By understanding school culture, and bringing social and emotional
needs to the forefront, educators will be able to better address, and manage the needs of our
students and optimize their learning.
